Personal training
Learn how to strength train properly with friendly, personalised coaching that helps you understand what to do, and why you’re doing it.
Why personal training
Almost everybody starts here. These are the questions I hear most often, and none of them are silly.
01Which exercises should I be doing?
02Am I using this properly?
03How heavy should I lift?
04How many sets and reps?
05Is everyone watching me?
06How do I put a workout together?
You don’t need to know everything before you start. That’s what coaching is for.
The approach
01
Understand what you’re doing and why. Every session is explained, never just counted out.
02
Learn good technique and use the gym equipment confidently, including the parts of the gym that feel off-limits right now.
03
Train progressively around your own goals, at a pace that suits the life you actually have.
04
Build the skills and confidence to train well without a PT beside you every time. That’s the goal.

I’d rather teach you to train than watch you train.

Client stories
“The weights area always felt a bit intimidating before. Maia has helped me understand what I’m doing and given me the confidence to train there on my own.”
Sophie, 29
“My biggest goal was to feel confident enough to train by myself. Maia gave me the knowledge, technique and structure I needed, and I now regularly train independently.”
Zoe, 49
“I wanted to stay strong and keep active, but I wasn’t always confident using weights on my own. Maia has made strength training feel much more straightforward, and I can really feel the difference in what I’m able to do.”
Paul, 22
“I started as a complete beginner and didn’t really know what I was doing in the gym. I’m now lifting much heavier weights with confidence, and for the first time I actually enjoy exercise and look forward to going to the gym.”

About
I’m Maia Stovold. I coach at Sound Mind and Body in Benton, and I’m in my third year of a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science at Newcastle University.
I’m most interested in physiology, strength and conditioning, and in helping people understand how their training actually works. I came into this from competitive swimming, running and netball, and I’ve completed an Ironman 70.3, so I know what it feels like to be a beginner at something hard.
Competitive swimming, running and netball got me here, plus an Ironman 70.3 — so I know what being a beginner at something hard feels like.
Evidence-led training, explained plainly, by somebody you can ask basic questions.
